well you said "audience" but i would say "scene". i think in this respect the dead were "scenesters". i think we might be on the same tip here, but the DEAD were exploiters. well, at the VERY LEAST, businessmen.

they WERE the shaman they seemed to be in those transcendent moments: they were there to enable an environment; to provide the atmosphere that would facilitate the scene. that is the genius, no? they would never be in this position if they could not deliver the GOODS.... and of course, they could.

they knew where the "next level" was. and they also knew, they could never go nonchalantly prancing in for no reason.

and so, from 69 onwards they played in measured intervals, that, in retrospect, they knew they could perpetuate ad infinitum.... they played it out for a quarter century. in human terms, an amazing effort.
